Choose equipment for the blocker in front of you: a controllable ranged weapon for dangerous catches, attachments concentrated on one weapon for the Fully equipped achievement, and a boat engine when travel time is the larger problem. Exact damage, reload and price tables are not yet confirmed by the inspected official material, so this guide uses task-based decisions instead of invented rankings.
Use the problem-first upgrade order
Quick answer
Build one dependable setup before buying every novelty. Keep enough money for ammunition, healing, boss bait and the next required progression step. Apply attachments to the same weapon if you are pursuing Fully equipped. Save after important purchases and keep critical gear in inventory or equipment slots when possible instead of treating the ground or boat as unlimited storage.
The separate weapons-and-casino page owns the three bounded achievement actions and Reel of Fortune wording. This page owns equipment choice, attachments, boat-engine priorities, storage risk and the Patch 1.0.10 cooked-gear recovery rule. Keeping those tasks separate prevents two pages from competing for the same primary keyword.
Equipment families visible in current sources
Official Steam media and a current attributed launch walkthrough show fishing rods, a knife, pistol, compact automatic weapon, shotgun, sniper rifle, dynamite and weapon attachments. Official achievements also establish an attachment-completion task and two boat-engine milestones.
Those sources prove that the equipment families exist. They do not publish a stable damage-per-second table, exact recoil, reload duration, ammunition efficiency, attachment prices or universal best weapon. A screenshot can show a gun without proving its numbers, and one creator’s fight can demonstrate a workable choice without making it best for every difficulty and crew size.
Problem-first upgrade order
If a dangerous catch reaches you before you can create distance, prioritize a ranged weapon you can control while moving. Practical uptime matters more than an unverified damage claim. If reload or handling repeatedly wastes the safe window, improve the setup you already understand before purchasing a second untested weapon.
If island travel consumes more time than combat, reserve money for a boat-engine upgrade. “Getting an upgrade” and “I am speed” confirm an engine progression path, but a faster boat does not shorten a boss damage phase or replace preparation.
If the next objective requires a specific bait, quest item or purchase, keep that money protected. Emptying the balance on a weapon immediately before a progression gate can create a larger delay than a modest equipment improvement saves.
Before a boss or secret catch, hold a reserve for ammunition and healing. Bing Bong consumes a community-reported paid Coconut route, while other bosses use named trigger bait. Equipment and encounter access are separate costs.
Attachments and Fully equipped
The Steam achievement wording says to apply all attachments to a single weapon. That makes scattered attachment purchases inefficient when the achievement is the goal. Choose one weapon that already suits your normal route, inspect its available slots and finish that set before branching into another build.
Do not count attachments spread across several weapons. Do not assume an icon shown on one weapon transfers to every other family. If the achievement does not trigger, recheck that each attachment belongs to the same current weapon and that the final state was saved.
This page does not publish an attachment count because the inspected first-party achievement wording establishes completion but not a universal slot table for every weapon. Use the live purchase interface for the exact selected item.
Boat engine priorities
The two engine achievements prove both an initial upgrade and a best-engine endpoint. Upgrade early when repeated island travel is the clearest bottleneck, especially if your current combat setup already handles ordinary catches. Delay the top engine when the next boss requires supplies or when the remaining money would leave the crew unable to recover from a failed attempt.
Treat the top engine as a savings target rather than an automatic first purchase. Faster travel benefits future routes, but it does not increase weapon damage, make a lure valid or solve a save problem.
In co-op, agree on a shared-money rule before one player purchases an engine or expensive gun. A crew may value travel speed differently from immediate boss readiness. State the next task and reserve before spending.
Weapons for bosses and Bing Bong
Choose around the safe window you can reproduce. A weapon that looks powerful but forces awkward stationary timing can underperform when the target changes direction rapidly. Maintain distance, use terrain as a temporary route aid and fire during controlled openings.
For Bing Bong, current community routes support sustained ranged damage and movement around trees, but no official health or mandatory gun is published. For Piranha and Pufferfish, use the dedicated boss pages because bait, arena and encounter behavior matter more than a generic equipment list.
In co-op, different angles are often more useful than identical positioning. One player can draw movement while others maintain fire, but this is a tactical recommendation rather than a guarantee that an encounter’s behavior remains fixed across versions and difficulty.
Storage and Patch 1.0.10
Patch 1.0.10 says up to 64 items dropped on the ground can persist, with weapons, tools, quest items and creatures receiving priority. Priority is not unlimited storage. Keep the active and expensive weapon in a supported slot where possible, reduce loose clutter and save after purchases or attachment changes.
If a weapon is missing, stop creating new state and use the save-and-autosave guide. Record whether it was equipped, in inventory, on the ground, on the boat, cooked or skinned. Those states should not be merged into one generic “storage bug.”
The same patch says cooked weapons and tools can be cleaned by dipping them in water. Use shallow water, recover the item, inspect it and save normally. The rule does not recreate an item that already disappeared.
Unconfirmed balance claims
A fresh player discussion asked whether the Sniper Rifle was nerfed, but the inspected Patch 1.0.10 announcement does not document a Sniper Rifle change. Its named balance adjustment is a slight Anglerfish health reduction. Until an official note or reproducible before-and-after test supplies numbers, do not publish a new Sniper damage value.
A useful comparison records patch, difficulty, target, player count, weapon, attachments, hit location and shot count. Without those fields, a longer fight can come from several variables and should not be converted into a tier-list claim.
Quick questions
What is the best weapon in How to Fish?
No universal best weapon is confirmed by the inspected official sources. Choose a controllable ranged option for dangerous catches and build around the encounter window you can repeat.
How do I complete Fully equipped?
Apply all attachments to one weapon. Do not spread them across several guns when pursuing that achievement.
Should I buy a weapon or boat engine first?
Buy for the current bottleneck. Choose combat equipment when fights block progress; choose an engine when repeated travel is the larger cost and supplies are already covered.
Can I store weapons on the ground?
Patch 1.0.10 adds capped persistence for up to 64 ground items and prioritizes weapons, but it does not create unlimited storage. Prefer supported slots and keep a save backup.
Was the Sniper Rifle nerfed?
That is not confirmed by Patch 1.0.10. Do not quote a new damage number without official wording or controlled current-build evidence.
